How to use it

  1. Write one record per decision, and give it a number and a short title.

  2. Keep the context factual: the problem and the forces at play, not the answer.

  3. List the real options, including doing nothing, with what’s for and against each.

  4. Send it for review. Once approved it’s published, and its history shows how it changed.

  5. When a decision is replaced, mark the old record as superseded and link the new one.

Questions

What is an architecture decision record?

A short document that records one significant decision: its context, the options considered, the choice and its consequences. Teams keep them together so anyone can see why things are the way they are.

Where should ADRs live?

Somewhere the whole team can read and search them, with history. In Stetley Pages each record is versioned and can require approval before it’s published.
