Coming soon

Steps to follow when something happens, written so that someone tired at 3am can follow them. With a review date, so it doesn’t quietly go out of date.

Coming soon

Stetley Pages is in preview with a few teams. It opens to everyone soon.

What’s in it

Before you start: who to tell, and what not to touch.

When to use this

The alert, symptom or request that brings someone here.

Steps

  • Check …
  • If …, then …
  • Confirm …

Commands

A code block

Done when

  • The alert has cleared
  • The incident channel is updated

Escalation

Who to call next, and how.

How to use it

  1. Name the alert or symptom that brings someone here, word for word as they’ll see it.

  2. Write steps as checks and actions: “Check …”, “If …, then …”. One action per step.

  3. Put commands in the code block, ready to copy.

  4. Say what done looks like, and who to call if it isn’t.

  5. Leave the six-month review on: Pages reminds the owner, and readers see when a page is past its date.

Questions

What is a runbook?

A step-by-step guide for a routine task or an incident: what to check, what to run and when to escalate.

How do I keep runbooks up to date?

Give each one a review date. In Stetley Pages a runbook is due for review every six months, and its owner is reminded.
